As the World Turns..
I would like to share a recent exchange I have had that helped me realize what a unique place West 7th Library is. One of our volunteers was nishing
her shift, and as she was gathering her belongings,
I remarked, “Thanks for helping us out today!” She smiled, paused, and then politely reminded me that she had been volunteering for the library for more than 20 years! “Today” was undeniably inadequate. We laughed and conversed about the history of West 7th and the integral part volunteers have played in its operation. She reinforced what I’ve seen every day I’ve been here, the devotion and enthusiasm this community has for its neighborhood library. I have been working at West 7th for just over a month and its evident everywhere that this com- munity values their library. There is a sense of pride and ownership that is quite compelling. Working the desk, I have enjoyed countless book reviews, met lots of Summer Spark kids and families, and bene ted from restaurant and walking route recommendations to help me explore the West End. Warm comments like “Now, you’re new here, aren’t you!?” and “How are you liking it?” have made me feel welcomed.
You have a gem of a library and I am grateful for this opportunity to work here, if even just temporarily.
Do you have an e-Reader, tablet, or smartphone you would like to get some help with? Want some tips on how to use the library’s lab computers? Help is here!
